Join us for a hands-on paper preservation workshop with Theresa Smith, Paper Conservator for Special Collections at Harvard Library’s Weissman Preservation Center.
Over the course of this weekend workshop, Theresa will introduce us to how paper is made by machine (grain direction, fiber and furnish), how different printing/reproduction processes affect handling and storage, safe paper handling, typical damages and how they’re caused (prevention), what can and can’t be repaired, what history of damage is worth preserving, and a basic strategy of treatment: observe, describe, document, plan the order of steps. This workshop will also include hands-on work relate to tools and techniques, and how to flatten creases, repair tears, and safely unroll. This workshop will also teach us when we need to get a conservator involved, and how we should properly store and house materials.
Space is limited, registration is required. To register, please email classes@interferencearchive.org
