Archival film night! “Takeover”: healthcare activism in 1970s NYC

When

Tuesday, July 30, 2024

7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Join us for an archival film night & discussion! We’ll be screening the 2021 documentary “Takeover” with the filmmaker, Emma Francis-Snyder.

“In 1970, a group of young Puerto Rican activists took over a decrepit hospital in New York City, launching a battle for their lives, their community, and healthcare for all.”

Update: Unfortunately, the filmmaker will no longer be able to attend, but the screening and collective discussion will go ahead!

As part of a series of archival film nights, this event will feature a screening and discussion of the recent 2021 documentary Takeover, which recounts the radical organizing and activism of the Young Lords in NYC in the 1970s. Through archival photographs, news footage, interviews with participants and recreations, it tells the story of one of their key actions: their takeover of the Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx.

The screening will be followed by a chance to learn more about other archival materials from the time and discuss and reflect collectively on the film and the broader significance and strategies of these actions and histories today. The hope for this event is to not only foreground often overlooked activist histories of the city, but also reflect together more broadly on political organizing, health, and historical methods/archives/media, particularly in relation to current and ongoing struggles.

Tickets are bookable through Eventbrite.

Masks are encouraged and available at the door.
