SYNOPSIS
MEXICAN DREAM is a film about the contradictions in the public discourse towards immigration. It is a story of economic desperation and societal alienation on both sides of the border: the people of Magdalena Peñasco in Oaxaca, Mexico, who go to Austin, Minnesota, to quarter pigs for Hormel Foods, the makers of Spam products. Communities change with migration, and in the process of adapting the old can sometimes not assimilate with the new. Filmmaker Jon and then-Ph.D. student Alex Euler document part of this uneasy transition.

ALEX RUIZ EULER
Alex Ruiz Euler is a Data Scientist for MTV Networks (Viacom) with a PhD in Political Science from the University of California San Diego. His dissertation–with funding from the National Science Foundation–used machine learning to uncover hidden relationships between income inequality, local elections and the provision of public goods (water, sewerage) to the poor in Mexico.

JON WETTERAU

His work explores social injustice and inanity in the contemporary world, in order to promote understanding and provoke thought regarding important issues.

The Kelleys
2005, Jon Wetterau, 24 mins.
The Kelleys is a story about loneliness and family in rapidly gentrifying New York. An old woman and her middle aged  son who suffers from alcoholism, share a rent-controlled apartment for half a century. He hardly works, rationalizing that he has to care for his mother. She does not really understand the way things in the neighborhood are changing or what is the matter with her son. He does indeed help take care of her, and she needs someone around the house but there is a paradox in that he can barely take care of himself, so the mother and son still have a tight bond despite its inherent dysfunctionality.
