Almost 30 years have passed since the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) took up arms against the Mexican federal government in 1994. The Zapatistas, as they are more commonly known, are an autonomous group based in Chiapas, Mexico that control much of the territory in Chiapas today. From the founding of the EZLN in 1983, to the mobilization of 40,000 people across Chiapas in 2012, to the present delegation touring Europe, the Zapatistas have cemented themselves in the history of world leftist organizations as an example of what resistance against violence and state hegemony can be like.

The Zapatistas are an amorphous organization that has introduced many crucial organizational strategies including the practice of non-hierarchical direct democracy, anti-institutionality, maintaining anonymity by individuals covering their faces and the construction of relational organizational strategies that have inspired many other liberation movements around the world.

In 2022 it is clear that the tactics of the Zapatistas have helped shape our movement’s struggles like the co-leadership practices of Black Lives Matter or even our own horizontal structure at Interference Archive.

Today, prints of balaclavas, snails and other imagery on display here have become iconic and help us reflect on the original position of the Zapatistas against the economic, political and cultural violence sanctioned by the Nation-State.

As we prepare to commemorate another anniversary of the 1994 uprising and 530 years of anti-colonial resistance, we invite you to reflect on the struggle and strength of the Zapatistas and participate in this exhibition curated by Edén Bastida Kullick’s Itinerant Zapatista Graphic Archive and Interference Archive. The posters, stickers, flyers, and original works of art that make up the Itinerant Zapatista Graphic Archive range from the founding of the EZLN to its present influences and Bastida Kullick continues to maintain and grow the collection in his habitual itinerancy.

Han pasado casi 30 años desde que el Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) se levantó en armas contra el gobierno federal mexicano. Los zapatistas, como se les conoce más comúnmente, son un grupo autónomo con sede en Chiapas, México que hoy en día controlan buena parte del territorio en Chiapas. Desde la fundación del EZLN en 1983, la marcha de 40.000 personas en cinco ciudades de Chiapas en 2012 y hasta el día de hoy, los zapatistas se han cimentado en la historia de las organizaciones de izquierda mundial como un ejemplo de cómo puede ser la resistencia contra la violencia y la hegemonía estatal.

Los zapatistas son una organización amorfa. Los zapatistas representan muchas estrategias organizativas cruciales, desde los individuos cubriéndose el rostro para mantener el anonimato, la practica de la democracia directa no jerárquica, la anti-institucionalidad y la construcción de estrategias organizativas relacionales que han inspirado a otros muchos movimientos de liberación a nivel internacional. 

Podemos ver cómo las tácticas de los zapatistas han ayudado a dar forma a las luchas de nuestro movimiento en 2022, desde las prácticas de liderazgo conjunto de Black Lives Matter, hasta incluso nuestra propia estructura horizontal en Interference Archive. 

Hoy, las imágenes icónicas de pasamontañas, caracoles y muchas otras nos hacen reflexionar sobre la postura original de los zapatistas contra la violencia económica, política y cultural sancionada por el Estado-Nación.

Mientras nos preparamos para conmemorar otro aniversario del levantamiento de 1994 y los 530 años de resistencia anticolonial, los invitamos a reflexionar sobre la lucha y la fuerza de los zapatistas y participar en esta exposición curada por el Archivo Itinerante de Gráfica Zapatista de Edén Bastida Kullick y el Archivo de Interferencias. Los afiches, calcomanías, volantes, y obras de arte originales que componen el Archivo Abierto Itinerante de Gráficas Zapatistas abarcan desde la fundación del EZLN hasta sus influencias de hoy en día, que Bastida Kullick mantiene y continúa coleccionando desde su itinerancia habitual.
